Revolutionizing Timber Management with Digital Innovation: Insights from Easy Engineering Interview

In a recent feature with Easy Engineering magazine, Anna-Greta Tsahkna, the CEO of Timbeter, delves into the innovative solutions that her company brings to the forefront of the timber industry. With a vision to revolutionize how timber is measured and managed, Tsahkna shares insights on how Timbeter’s technology not only enhances efficiency but also promotes sustainability within the sector.

Timbeter

Easy Engineering: What are the ranges of products and what types of services do you offer?

Timbeter’s platform allows for real-time overview of measurements and truck movements, which can be easily shared and accessed by various stakeholders in the timber industry, such as forest managers, timber harvesting companies, and sawmills. This facilitates fully transparent supply chain management, inventory control, and compliance with forestry regulations like for example EUDR.

The system is designed to reduce time and labor costs associated with timber measurement, enhance the accuracy of measurements, improve the traceability of timber supplies, and assist in sustainable forest management practices by providing detailed data on harvested timber.

E.E: How does Timbeter work?

Data is being collected with the Timbeter application by making measurements of the pile using a smartphone or a tablet. The application captures images of logs in various configurations, whether they are in a pile, on a truck, or container. Once the photograph is taken, the app uses AI to analyze the image. It identifies each log within the pile, measures the diameters of the logs, counts the number of logs, and calculates the volume of the timber.

All the measurements and data collected by the app are stored in the cloud, providing real-time overview and easy data sharing and management. Users can generate reports, export data to other systems, and analyze historical data to make informed decisions. Additionally, each measurement and the truck route is tagged with GPS location data, providing precise information on the logs’ location, which aids in traceability, inventory management, and verifying the legality of the timber.

E.E: In what types of projects do clients use Timbeter?

Timbeter is widely adopted in the forestry industry by different segments, starting from the private forest owners until the large manufacturers. Its primary applications span across forest inventory management, logging operations, and sawmill operations, enhancing efficiency and accuracy in measuring and managing timber. The technology also plays a crucial role in transportation and logistics, ensuring the accurate tracking and delivery of timber resources. In the realm of trade and export, Timbeter facilitates the documentation process, providing reliable measurements and photographic evidence of timber volumes.

E.E: How does Timbeter increase profitability for users?

Timbeter boosts profitability by revolutionizing timber measurement and management with its precise and easy-to-use technology, reducing human error and saving time. This enables more accurate inventory management and informed decision-making for logistics, sales and production. It streamlines data collection and reporting, enhancing operational efficiency and compliance with standards like EUDR through better traceability and transparency. This transparency fosters stakeholder trust and opens new market opportunities. Additionally, Timbeter optimizes load planning, reducing transportation costs, and its cloud-based platform facilitates cost-effective remote management of timber assets.

E.E: How can clients sustainably use Timbeter?

Clients can use Timbeter for sustainable forestry by integrating it for digital forest management, enabling precise inventory and monitoring for informed harvesting. This minimizes waste and conserves resources by optimizing log use. Timbeter also boosts transparency and traceability, aiding in sustainable sourcing and combating illegal logging. The technology supports data-driven decisions for better forestry practices and sustainability. Additionally, optimizing logistics with Timbeter reduces the transportation’s carbon footprint, while transparent data sharing with communities fosters trust in sustainable forestry efforts.

E.E: How do you see the future in your field?

Timbeter is set for growth in the forestry sector, with prospects for wider global adoption fueled by the demand for efficient and sustainable practices. AI and machine learning enhancements will improve species identification, defect detection, and yield predictions. As a key player in sustainability, Timbeter aids in meeting new regulations, certification standards and increasing sector transparency.
