ArcelorMittal is the second largest steelmaker in the world, with operations in more than 18 countries and an employee base of almost 200,000. They have used Timbeter to help manage their operations in Brazil since 2018, and have become reliant on the accurate volumes of fuelwood, more precise use of resources, and improved employee safety. Our team talked to Mr. André Soares, Forestry Analyst, to get to know how Timbeter has benefited their operations.
Why did you initially choose Timbeter, and what were the main problems/issues you wanted to solve?
Timbeter caught our attention due to its ability to provide precise, understandable results fast. It has also made our work environment safer, direct contact with the wood is significantly reduced, which in turn reduces the risk of accidents.
What do you use Timbeter for?
We use Timbeter to measure the wood density factor in all our storage points at the State of Minas Gerais. We started using it especially because of the density measurements, a special measurement regime in Timbeter that allows us to calculate the density coefficient, or air filling factor, in a pile of wood that determines the amount of timber without bark and air. Before Timbeter, this was done by setting a frame of 1m x 1m to the pile and measuring each diameter manually.
What are the main processes in your company that have seen benefits from using Timbeter?
With Timbeter, our wood density factor results are now much more accurate, and are also much quicker. The system is also very user friendly, meaning adoption across the relevant processes and partners was a smooth and simple process. .
What are the additional benefits in terms of sustainability?
By using Timbeter, we now work only with a tablet and have reduced all paperwork and are now paper-free. It has also improved our logistics, because Timbeter optimizes our timber demands a lot, reducing the number of shipments that we need to make, thereby reducing our environmental impact through reduced pollution.
Does Timbeter support you in achieving your sustainability goals?
Definitely. As I said before, it has helped us go paper-free and reduced product waste as the density measurement allows us to use exactly the amount required for our operations.
How did your team members find adjusting to TImbeter, and how did the transition from manual to digital go?
The overall reception of the system was very good, and as I said before, the system is very user-friendly and easy to use for our partners and team members. The transition was very easy, and now we really feel like we could not work without Timbeter!
Did you have any unexpected results thanks to Timbeter?
Not really, although this is a good thing – all Timbeter’s explanatory material is so well prepared and educationalthat the benefits it would bring us were clear before adoption.
