Data-Driven Forestry Excellence: Unveiling the Impact of Intelligent Solutions, report from National Ilan University, Taiwan

Last year, Timbeter started the cooperation with National Ilan University from Taiwan to introduce the technology to the students and industry professionals. Associate Professor Chih-Hsin Chung, National Ilan University, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources described the cooperation and the goals in more detail.

To promote the digital transformation of Taiwan’s forestry industry, the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at National Ilan University invested in research to introduce new intelligent tools to help improve the efficiency and accuracy of forestry operations. We are actively exploring cutting-edge technologies such as remote sensing, data analytics and artificial intelligence. The research focuses on the implementation and evaluation of many innovative smart tools and applications such as Timbeter, Smart Tape, LiDAR, Laser Rangefinder, etc. By streamlining processes and enabling real-time data sharing, these smart tools will empower forest managers, researchers and policymakers to make informed decisions. By leveraging the power of digital solutions, they seek to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and overall environmental stewardship.

Timbeter National Ilan University

In Taiwan, a substantial volume of timber is measured annually, primarily relying on manual measurements before transportation. We implemented Timbeter to replace and optimize the manual measurement process. The solution demonstrated high accuracy and efficiency of logs digital measurements for both individual and stacked logs. Last year we held 4 training courses and trained about 100 students to learn about innovative intelligent tools. Timbeter is an AI-based solution that combines machine learning methods to efficiently obtain timber diameters, volume and any other relevant information.  Its user-friendly management interface facilitates an intuitive understanding of timber measurement and data management for students and decision-makers alike.

In the near future, we will continue to introduce more intelligent tools that can improve productivity, more accurate and efficient management of timber that can reduce waste of resources, promote environmental sustainability and meet carbon reduction goals.
