Many future foresters are writing dissertations based on conducting experiments with the software, comparing digital measurements to manual, and exploring modern technology for improving and optimizing the quality of forestry processes. In a seminar format, Timbeter’s product was presented to more than 150 bachelor and master students, as well as faculty teachers and professors.
Oleksandr Lesnik, candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Forest Mensuration and Forest Management of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, shared his thoughts on how Timbeter’s solution will help develop Ukrainian forestry and secure against illegal activities: “The implementation of Timbeter’s software in today’s realities can reduce the turnover of illegally sold timber products during logging operations**.** Now the electronic system of timber tracking must be maintained on a mandatory basis during timber harvesting. However, given the insufficient number of employees, the measuring of harvested timber products often occurs when the timber leaves the site. Therefore, for a certain time these unaccounted products are at the site and can be illegally exported. Timbeter allows any of the employees at the end of harvesting to easily and simply take a photo, determine the volume of wood and subsequently control its transportation, removal or sale”.

In Ukraine, only firewood is measured in batches using the pile density coefficient, with other assortments mainly accounted for log by log. According to regulations, properly measuring volume of firewood in Ukraine involves determining the length, width, and height of the pile and multiplying these parameters, then the resulting value is multiplied by the pile density coefficient. These coefficients depend on:
- type of firewood (industrial or non-industrial firewood);
- length of logs;
- species (coniferous or deciduous group) and the type of firewood (thin, medium, split, mixed).
Since December 2021 all forestry companies are required to use the electronic system of timber tracking, which is a program for monitoring timber that has been harvested and processed. How does the electronic system of timber tracking work? A special tag is affixed to the harvested timber. This tag encrypts information about the characteristics of the wood and the place where it was cut. When the wood is moved on to the warehouse, a bill of lading is affixed to it with information about transportation.
Together, all of this information goes into the electronic timber tracking system. This data keeps a clear track of who cut the timber, what type of timber, where it was cut and, most importantly, how much. Thus, it is possible to compare how much timber was cut and how much timber was sold afterwards.
