Timbeter expands to Iceland: Welcoming Skógarafurðir as our first Icelandic client

Timbeter is proud to announce its first partnership in Iceland with Skógarafurðir ehf, a pioneering family-owned forestry company based in Fljótsdal. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our mission to bring digital innovation to sustainable forestry practices across the globe.

A Brief History of Iceland’s Forests

At the time of human settlement over 1,100 years ago, Iceland was covered by forests and woodlands on approximately 25–40% of its land area. However, extensive deforestation occurred due to timber harvesting for fuel and construction, as well as land clearing for agriculture and grazing. By the mid-20th century, forest cover had diminished to less than 1% of the country’s land area .

In response, Iceland has undertaken significant reforestation efforts. The Icelandic Forest Service, established in 1907, has been instrumental in these initiatives, aiming to restore forest cover and promote sustainable land use .

Skógarafurðir: Innovators in Icelandic Forestry

Founded in November 2014 by father and son Jón Ólafur Sigurðsson and Bjarki M. Jónsson, Skógarafurðir ehf operates a forest product processing facility in Ytri-Víðivellir II, Fljótsdal. The company specializes in the processing of Icelandic wood, offering a range of services from harvesting to the production of finished wood products .

Demonstrating a commitment to innovation, Skógarafurðir was the first in Iceland to acquire a custom-built timber transport vehicle, enhancing their operational efficiency and capacity .

Embracing Digital Solutions with Timbeter

The integration of Timbeter’s digital platform into Skógarafurðir’s operations signifies a transformative step in Icelandic forestry. Timbeter’s technology enables precise measurement and inventory management of timber, facilitating data-driven decision-making and promoting sustainable practices.

The Significance for Iceland and Beyond

Iceland’s unique environmental conditions and history of deforestation make sustainable forestry practices particularly important. The adoption of digital solutions by companies like Skógarafurðir sets a precedent for the industry, showcasing the potential for technology to support environmental restoration and economic development.

This partnership between Timbeter and Skógarafurðir not only enhances the capabilities of Icelandic forestry but also contributes to global efforts in sustainable forest management.
